Back to the Future: An Exploration of Contemporaneity in Korean Contemporary Art

at its Gwacheon branch in Gyeonggi Province. The collection, which encompasses a total of 209 artworks amassed by Park, the founder of Dongsanbang Gallery, was donated to the state-run museum by his son in the last two years. The show chronicles Korea’s artistic progression — from the genesis of modern Korean painting in the 1920s to the 2000s — through the works of 57 creatives, including Kim Ku-jin, Heo Baekryeon and Hong Sukchang.

The ongoing exhibition, “Back to the Future,” highlights the national museum’s collection amassed from 2018 to 2022. A large number of these acquisitions, ranging from the late 1980s to 2010, have been produced by creatives who brought fresh perspectives to the Korean contemporary art world during the transformative 1990s, including Bahc Yi-so and Kim Beom. Key moments in contemporary art and the influence of changing socio-political landscapes on art forms are well encapsulated in this show.
