Corning Gorilla Glass Korea unveiled its new glass cover for smartphones that has improved drop resistance, aiming to supply the latest product to flagship smartphones that will be launched in 2023, the head of the Korean unit of the U.S.-based company said Thursday.

Jum Kim, president of Corning Gorilla Glass Korea, introduced the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 during an online press conference, saying the new product is the most suitable for smartphones these days that are becoming heavier and adopting larger screens.

“For the past 15 years, we have consistently introduced new glass products to meet the needs of mobile device users. As they went through the pandemic, people’s use of smartphones also increased. Smartphones have become a part of our lives, such as having virtual meetings, ordering food in the evening, searching for the weather before going to bed and watching dramas,” Kim said.

“Demand is also increasing for better drop performance and durability against scratches. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is the first Gorilla Glass product that enhances durability so that smartphones can survive one-meter drops onto a rough surface such as concrete.”

“In lab tests, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 survived drops of up to one meter on a surface simulating concrete. Competitive aluminosilicate glass from other manufacturers typically fails when dropped from half a meter or less. In addition, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 continued to survive drops up to two meters on a surface replicating asphalt and maintained scratch resistance up

to four times better than competitive aluminosilicate,” the company said.

When asked which smartphone makers such as Samsung Electronics or Apple will use the new glass covers for their new gadgets, Hyun-woo Kim, sales director of the company, declined to name a specific brand, but added, “Smartphones equipped with the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be launched in the next few months.”

The head of the Korean unit also shared the company’s business strategy, which is “More Corning.”

“Our strategy is ‘More Corning,’ which is to put our cover glass on more smart devices. It is true the demand for IT products is on the decline, but if we keep releasing innovative products like the Victus 2, we expect to perform as well as this year in 2023,” the president said.
